Children of Portuguese citizens

Children of Portuguese citizens born abroad are entitled to Portuguese nationality. It is not necessary for the ascending Portuguese to be alive for the transmission of the right to the Portuguese nationality.

Estimated time for the completion of the procedure: 6 months to 1 year.

You can apply for the Portuguese nationality under these conditions and be considered Portuguese from birth if:

  • You were born abroad;
  • You have a portuguese parent.

Grandchildren of Portuguese people

Grandchildren of Portuguese born abroad are entitled to Portuguese nationality. It is not necessary for the ascending Portuguese to be alive for the transmission of the right to Portuguese nationality.

Estimated time for completion of the procedure: 10 to 18 months.

You can apply for Portuguese nationality under these conditions if:

  • You were born abroad;
  • You have a portuguese grandparent;
  • You have an affective connection with the portuguese community*.

** The affective connection with the Portuguese community can be proven, among other means, when the applicant:

  • has knowledge of the Portuguese language;
  • has legal residence in Portugal;
  • regularly travels to Portugal;
  • bought or rent a house in Portugal for more than 3 years;
  • live or have a connection with a Portuguese historical community abroad;
  • over the past 5 years, he has regularly participated in the activities of the expatriate Portuguese community in the country where he lives, for example, attending the activities of the Portuguese cultural and recreational associations of these communities.

Great-grandson of Portuguese

Great-grandchildren of Portuguese can also obtain Portuguese Nationality. However, in in these cases, obtaining the nationality will depend on who is still alive in the applicant's family.

In this modality, first the request is made on behalf of the grandfather / grandmother (children of the Portuguese), if they are alive, or else on behalf of the Portuguese grandson, so that the generational bond is formed and allows the obtention of Portuguese nationality by the great-grandchildren of the portuguese citizen.

  • You were born abroad;
  • You have a portuguese grandparent;

  • regularly travels to Portugal;
  • bought or rent a house in Portugal for more than 3 years;
  • live or have a connection with a Portuguese historical community abroad;
  • over the past 5 years, he has regularly participated in the activities of the expatriate Portuguese community in the country where he lives, for example, attending the activities of the Portuguese cultural and recreational associations of these communities.
